an old lady

arrested on the pavement

at the corner of the avenue

frozen like a statue

leaning on a stick

as if she’s three-legged

and it’s the strongest limb.

all over town

senior citizens

just like this

as if deactivated

by divine remote control,

bewitched into stillness

by pain, fatigue,

shortness of breath.

the weariness of all the years

stops them dead.

they wait for someone to press play

but they wish

with all the power of wishing

that they could just rewind.
