a beach and a café.

The waiters rush out

to warn us –

schoolboys in an air raid –

and usher us to boats.


The English

resignation to rain.

Everyone is rolling up

matting and clutching

belongings in a cool

fervour to desert the beach.


We make our escape

to the mainland,


in a lifeboat,

all fortitude and team spirit.


On safe arrival we

vouchsafe our captain

gratitude, polite applause,

slightly disappointed

that he only wants drachma.
